Plan Good results happen when children, families and others are partners in the treatment process and when treatment is based on a thorough assessment of needs and strengths. Collaborative treatment planning or revising the treatment plan helps families feel a sense of ownership and responsibility for the plan. It is here where expected goals or outcomes (restoring a behavioral health function or skill) are delineated and where strengths are incorporated into strategies (service activities). Equally important during the collaboration is identification of baselines and indicators (objectives) that will measure observable progress in behavioral skills or functions.

Implement Good results happen when the treatment plan is used as a tool to guide service provision and provide focused treatment for behavioral health needs. There are various service modalities that may be purchased. It is important to understand the unique characteristics of the service(s) authorized. Regularly assessing objectives and strategies is critical during this, generally the longest phase in treatment.

Review Good results happen when progress toward meeting behavioral health needs is reviewed regularly. This requires a thoughtful review of the plan. Ask whether there is evidence of progress toward expected outcomes. Are the strategies working? Do your session notes and progress reports reflect assessment of progress or barriers that may be impeding progress? If progress is lacking there should be a discussion with the child and family on their perceptions of what is not working and why.

Revise Good results happen when needed changes are made to the treatment plan objectives or strategies to ensure behavioral health needs are being addressed and that progress is occurring. If you and the family determine that changes to the plan are needed, you move again to the planning phase to revise the plan for treatment. This time, however, you have the benefit of experience in addition to assessment materials. Remember, a collaborative process better ensures good results.
